Frequently asked questions

Pre-placement talks fail with Gen Z because they're designed to sell the company rather than address what Gen Z is actually evaluating. Gen Z candidates research companies thoroughly before any campus interaction - they already know the perks. What they're listening for is: Does this organisation have a real culture? Will my manager actually develop me? Are the leaders here people I'd want to learn from? Most pre-placement talks answer none of these questions.

Gen Z responds best to: honest accounts of what working at the company is actually like; real examples of employee growth including promotions and career pivots; transparency about challenges the company faces; stories from employees 2–3 years out of campus rather than only senior executives; and a clear articulation of the company's purpose beyond financial performance. Authenticity consistently outperforms polished brand presentations.

The most common mistakes: (1) leading with compensation and perks - Gen Z ranks purpose and growth above both; (2) using only senior executives as speakers - Gen Z relates more to near-peers; (3) generic content not tailored to the specific campus audience; (4) passive lecture format with no interactive dialogue; and (5) failing to address sustainability, DEI, and social impact - Gen Z evaluates these as non-negotiables.

Effective pre-placement talks for Gen Z should: open with company purpose, not revenue; feature employee panellists who are 1–3 years out of campus; include real, unscripted dialogue about career paths; explain management culture honestly; and close with a transparent 'what makes us hard to work for' statement. This radical honesty consistently builds more credibility than any polished brand presentation.

Campus recruiters who understand Gen Z design better internship structures: real projects with genuine business impact; regular 1:1 mentoring sessions; clear learning goals with mid-point reviews; access to senior leaders for meaningful conversations; and structured feedback at the end. TheMentorPark's fellowship internship model is built on exactly these principles - producing interns who contribute from day one and convert to full-time at significantly higher rates.
